What are veterinarian script fees?
Starting February 5th, 2024, The Equine Clinic at Oakencroft will institute a $15/script (prescription) fee for all requests from outside/online pharmacies. The fee will need to be paid to Oakencroft by credit card prior to the script being issued.
What is a veterinarian script fee?
A veterinarian script fee is a processing fee that allows veterinarians to manage the financial cost of fulfilling orders for medications placed outside of their practice.
How does it work?
Here’s a common example:
Your veterinarian writes a prescription (script) for a medication.
You order that medication from your local pharmacy.
The pharmacy contacts the Oakencroft team to verify and approve the prescription.
The Oakencroft team works with the dispensing pharmacy and the veterinarian to make changes based on availability, brand, etc.
The medication is approved.
Why are you charging a script fee now?
With the explosion of online sources for medications, the volume of scripts received daily by our practice has increased exponentially and reviewing them has become very time consuming for our staff and veterinarians.
Approving prescriptions is not just a simple click of a button. Each and every script must be reviewed by both Oakencroft staff and your veterinarian to ensure the safety and suitability of that medication for the patient. Additionally, modifications and legal information must be provided to the pharmacy based on both the patient and the veterinarian that is prescribing the medication. Not only does this process consume hours of time every day for all our staff and veterinarians, but your veterinarian is also liable for any complications arising from that medication over which they had no direct control.
How can I avoid paying the script fee?
If you purchase your medications from Oakencroft Equine’s in-house online pharmacy the script fees are waived!
We launched the in-house online pharmacy so we could control all aspects of the prescription process. This eliminates the need to work with dozens of outside pharmacies to get scripts approved and therefore removes the need for the script fee.
