Undergrad Visits

The vets at Oakencroft know that choosing to pursue a career in equine veterinary medicine is a huge choice that can’t be made lightly. To help we offer undergraduate students the chance to ride along and shadow our vets and practice staff. Typical visits often run for a few days to a week and students experience a great deal of what goes into the day-to-day operation of our clinic.

Why visit and ride along with Oakencroft?

  • You’ll get a great sense of how our team of vets, assistants, and clinic staff work together to provide comprehensive care to our patients.

  • Oakencroft is primarily an ambulatory veterinary practice so we visit most patients at their farms or stables. Riding along with our team to these calls will give you an understanding of what this particular branch of the veterinary profession requires.

Application

Fill out our undergraduate student visitation application completely to be considered. Please note that our vets cannot take visiting students with them on any weekends or during the months of December and January. If you have any questions you can contact us any time.

More Information

  • If you are interested in shadowing Oakencroft for longer than a week your request will be treated differently and it will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Visiting students are typically required to meet with the vet they are shadowing between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM and depending on the day vets can be on the road until late into the evening. Students cannot be dropped off early so plan for full day on the road.

  • Bring weather-appropriate apparel depending on what time of year you are visiting. To maintain safety and a professional image we require our vets and the students shadowing them wear at least trousers or jeans, a collared shirt such as a polo shirt, and closed-toe shoes such as paddock boots or sneakers. In the winter we recommend warm boots, a warm jacket or overalls, a hat, and mittens.

  • A parental permission form is required for students under the age of 18.
